The “initCompleteHandler” function is protected in the FX4 DownloadProgressBar

Posted in ActionScript 3.0, Adobe Flex, Flex by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 29, 2009

Great news for all of us implementing Custom Preloaders…

Instead of having a private “initCompleteHandler” function on the DownloadProgressBar, the function is now protected so we can override it in custom implementations. This means that we no longer have to implement the IPreloaderDisplay interface and hack out a lot of the intended functionality in order to have the preloader also handling the load of the application logic so that it does not change to Application View until the Application is considered to actually be ready.

This is great news… making the DownloadProgressBar a lot better… now it all seems like just need some kind of “preventDefault” behavior in order to have total control over the switch from preloader to application without having to bloat the preloader itself…

Currently I am resorting to including either classes such as the PureMVC facade, a Mate eventmap or another kind of EventAggregator into the Preloader SWF in order to be able to hook into it… this is however only possible if you also hack a bit around in order to prevent the default switch from preloader to application.

Adobe Nordic Interactive Tour… Copenhagen

Posted in Adobe, Events by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 23, 2009

Now that the Adobe Nordic Interactive Tour is finished, its nice to look back on some great presentations… last was Copenhagen which wasn’t exactly perfect…
The audience was great, however the Internet was not that great effectively terminating my presentation and cutting it a bit short by preventing me from displaying camera action and home automation… even via the iPhone…

The image is a bit dark, but I hope you can make out the contures of a presentor desperately trying to make the presentation strick together despite the lacking internet.

Adobe Nordic Interactive Tour… Number of attendees…

Posted in Adobe Community, Events by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 19, 2009

The most recent numbers for the upcoming events in Helsinki and Copenhagen are looking pretty good. However, its always difficult to estimate the actual number of expected turn-ups based on the number of sign-ups, but nevertheless it actually looks good in terms of numbers…

  • Helsinki am – 187
  • Helsinki pm – 114
  • Copenhagen am – 351
  • Copenhagen pm – 236

Thinking about the fact that the numbers for Oslo and Stockholm were as follows, and the fall-out’s were apr. 10-20%…

  • Oslo am – 172
  • Oslo pm – 136
  • Stockholm am – 302
  • Stockholm pm – 244

I’m looking forward to seeing the actual number of attendees in Copenhagen…

I’f you have not signed up yet, then you can still sign up… and don’t forget… it doesn’t cost anything else than your time and effort to signup and attend…

Microsoft Silverlight Training… 1st 1/2 day

Posted in Silverlight, Training by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 14, 2009

Now we have completed the first half day of the Silverlight Training Course sponsored by Microsoft here in the area North of Copenhagen called Troeroed.
Struggling with the coffee machine to begin with, the course (which was facilitated and hosted by outsiders to Microsoft) is pretty OK.
Up to this point there has been no surprises, but its really interesting to see how these very skilled guys go about presenting a RIA technology…

There are some pretty cool stuff in Silverlight making it an interesting technology, either to start utilizing or either to start getting inspiration from…

Can’t wait to see how right I am inmy assumption that I will be able to port quite a number of the frameworks we have in ActionScript to Silverlight.

Mate… the true story behind the name

Posted in Arbitrary Thoughts, Mate Flex Framework by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 5, 2009

The Mate Flex Framework is as many thought to be named as you were calling a buddy… but this is actually not so.

Mate (pronounced: [ˈmate]), as in the Mate Flex Framework, is actually named after an Argentinean drink and not the nickname of a buddy (even though you would be with them when you drink the “mate”).

You can read this and much more at e.g. Wikipedia who has a pretty exhaustive article about it…

Free Beer…. first open source beer

Posted in Inspiration, OpenSource by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 5, 2009

FREE BEER is a beer which is free in the sense of freedom, not in the sense of free beer.

The project, originally conceived by Copenhagen-based artist collective Superflex and students at the Copenhagen IT University, applies modern free software / open source methods to a traditional real-world product – namely the alcoholic beverage loved and enjoyed globally, and commonly known as beer.

FREE BEER is based on classic ale brewing traditions, but with addded Guaraná for a natural energy boost. The recipe and branding elements of FREE BEER is published under a Creative Commons (Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5) license, which means that anyone can use the recipe to brew their own FREE BEER or create a derivative of the recipe. Anyone is free to earn money from FREE BEER, but they must publish the recipe under the same license and credit the original work. All design and branding elements are available to beer brewers, and can be modified to suit, provided changes are published under the same license (“Attribution & Share Alike”)

FREE BEER is based on Vores Øl v. 1.
FREE BEER v 3.0 is currently under revision by Skands Brewery.

Kap Inspect… really cool tool by Kap Lab

Posted in Tools by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 5, 2009

When instrumenting applications, it’s always important to have the instrumentation tools to leave as small a footprint as possible. With some tools it can be done entirely unobtrusively, but these options also are not the most powerful. Kap Inspect is not entirely unobtrusive seeing that it’s not hooked onto the app at runtime, but added as a couple of lines of code on Top level of the app; however the power and still relative small footprint it offers makes it the preferred choice here at Hello™ for our Flex Applications.

The French Company Kap Lab has decided to share this tool which was initially developed for internal usage, and we could only appreciate their efforts if they had decided to open source it… but let’s face it, when you have something cool which might turn into a commoditisizable product, you always have to consider if it’s serves your own interest best to open source it.

Anyways, check it out…

Denmark has new PM… now with a website

Posted in Inspiration by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 5, 2009

Due to Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s escape to the position as General Secretary for NATO, Denmark has a new PM.

In true Mr. Barack Obama style, the new PM of Denmark, Mr. Lars Løkke Rasmussen (not related to the former PM), has created a massive online profile and presence including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Flickr… very Web 2.0…

Check it out…

And while you are at it… check out Mr. Rasmus Skjoldan, the guy who made it happen in a matter of hours (ok ok, perhaps days)…

Denmark is a cool place…

Posted in Inspiration by Peter Andreas Molgaard on April 2, 2009

There is no doubt about it, even though I sometimes seem to be fed up with the culture for innovation and entrepreneurship in Denmark… A lot of people still manage to make it happen and come up with some great ideas and concepts…
One of these is the company Lila who are working on something truly cool and revolutionizing… The architecture is backed by no other than Cliff Hall (Creator and Innovator of PureMVC) and the development team features none other than Martin Rossil (Former Hello employee).
They have published a video which captures the excitement and dedication that the people behind the product has… check it out…
